Bereavement Status

Patient Encounter – Bereavement Status

When you discharge a patient and use one of the following discharge reasons:

• Expired at home
• Expired in a medical facility
• Expired - place unknown you will now be able to include a bereavement “start” date as part of the discharge information.

Once you complete the discharge using one of the above reasons and include the bereavement date, the Patient status will say: “Bereavement”. To discharge a patient with a “Bereavement” status, use the following path:

• Patients menu
• Patient Encounters option
• Find/Select a Patient
• Select the “Discharge Patient” link that appears at the top of the page
• Select one of the “expired” discharge reasons as identified above from the Discharge Reason dropdown list (pop-up redisplays with the “Bereavement date” field)
• Change the discharge date if necessary (defaults to current date but can be changed)
• Change the bereavement date if necessary (defaults to current date but can be changed)
• Select the appropriate type of document from the Order Type dropdown list
• Change admission source and admission type as necessary (defaults to information added when activating the patient)
• If you want to exclude this patient from the Patient Satisfaction Survey, check to box
• Select the Save button

After you discharge the patient using one of the “expired” reasons, a new field labeled “Bereavement Start Date” will display on the Patient Encounter, Profile tab in the Current Encounter section.
You can also add a “Bereavement To Date” when you want to change the status to“discharged”once the bereavement period is over. After you enter a “to” date that is less than or equal to the current date, the Patient status will change to “Discharged”. To add the “to” date, use the following path:

• Patients menu
• Patient Encounters option
• Find/Select a patient
• Select the “Edit Bereavement” icon to the right of the Bereavement Start Date field that appears under the Current Encounter section of the Profile tab
• Enter an “end” date
• Select the Save button

After entering the “end” date, the “Bereavement To Date” field displays on the Profile tab, just below the “Bereavement Start Date” field that appears under the Current Encounter section of the Profile tab. (note: if you enter a future date, the Patient status will still say Bereavement until that date) The bereavement status now shows on the Patient Encounters list. If you want to view a listing of your Bereavement patients, use the following path to create a listing/report:

• Patients menu
• Patient Encounters option
• Select “Bereavement” from Status dropdown list (bereavement patients display)
• Select “Adobe (PDF) or Spreadsheet” option from the Export dropdown list
• Select the Export button

The Report displays on your screen. Use your browser printer functions to print the report.
